Joseph Beuys was born in Krefeld, Germany. He studied painting and drawing at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts and then at the Staatliche Kunstakademie in Karlsruhe. In 1972 he went to Berlin, where he became involved in the art scene. He was a key figure in the German Neo-Dada movement and his involvement with Fluxus art brought him worldwide recognition
His work emphasized the idea of social responsibility, and his "social sculpture" (Kunst zur Umwelt) was influential on environmental and social movements such as Earth First! and Green politics. He was also interested in political art and worked closely with the East German government to produce political posters for their 1968 campaign.
